rules and limits."

Parenting a child is a challenging job, even under the best circumstances.  Parenting a child who has been in the custody of the State is a unique challenge. TheParenting Support Services offered by The Children’s Place were created to help adults improve their parenting skills by offering the knowledge and support they need to create a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment for children in their care.

Programs offered to parents by The Children’s Place are wide-ranging and diverse and designed to help area parents in ways that are proven and effective.

These programs are:

Family Enrichment Series
– a six week program that involves parents in an exploration of parenting styles, techniques and strategies to enrich family relationships.

In-Home Parent Aide Services –provides one-on-one help to deal with specific problems in order to stabilize the family. This program can be as intensive as two weekly visits, or as a once a month visit to discuss specific issues.

Becoming a foster or adoptive parent brings unique challenges that require additional support and training. The Parenting Support Services provides the following training opportunities:

S.T.A.R.S. Training – this program provides 30 hours of pre-service training to teach foster and adoptive parents skills specially suited to the needs of children in the care of the State. The topics include specific developmental needs, methods of fostering healthy attachments, forging strong family relationships, and practical tips on promoting positive self-esteem.

Spaulding Training – this is offered to families who wish to adopt a child. This is a 12 hour program that helps families take a realistic look at their expectations of adoption in an effort to improve the likelihood of a successful placement.

In-Service Training to Remain a Foster/Adoptive Parent – provides ongoing training in varied, specialized topics pertinent to parenting children in foster/adoptive homes.

To attend any of these training opportunities you must contact the Children’s Division at 816-889-2002.
